As the winter months approach, it can be a good time to leave the city behind and take a luxury short break to explore the countryside in Australia and New Zealand. We’re thinking road trips, gourmet meals, local wines and roaring fires. The cooler weather also makes it a nicer time to explore the outdoors, especially if you’re into hiking, cycling or snow sports.

We’ve put together a few suggestions to inspire some winter holiday ideas for Australia & New Zealand.

1). Cycling Tours

For the recreational cycler, head off for a long weekend and take a one day self guided gourmet cycling tour around the vineyards in Mudgee, or fully guided multi-day cycling & photography tour on the South Island of New Zealand. Cycling tours are a peaceful way to take in the countryside, stopping off for gourmet meals along the way. You could stay in a luxury farmhouse on private farmland in country NSW, or take in the amazing views of the NZ Southern Highlands from a stylish lodge.

2). Explore the Vineyards

Have you considered a quick trip over in New Zealand to explore the vineyards around Hawkes Bay on the north island, or Otago on the south island. Choose from one of the many luxury lodges, and enjoy some local wine beside the fireplace during the winter months. You can explore the surrounding towns and countryside, or plan a couple of nights in one of New Zealand’s cities on the way home. For somewhere closer to home, why not try the vineyards around Orange and Mudgee?

3). Wellness Retreats

Take a week out just for you. If your batteries need recharging you may want to indulge in a relaxing week of yoga, healthy eating and spa treatments. Or if you have some fitness goals in mind, there are now some more active wellness escapes that include personal training, outdoor workouts and surfing experiences. Why not consider a coastal or countryside retreat in Australia, New Zealand, Bali or Thailand? There are several options for accommodation including your own villa with private chef and trainer, five-star resorts in remote destinations with superb facilities.

4). Snowsports

Skiing and snowboarding are certainly the most popular of the winter sports. It’s certainly convenient to plan a long weekend down at Thredbo or Mt Hotham - but if you have the time, we’d recommend going across to Wanaka or Queenstown in New Zealand for ski holiday in the southern hemisphere. And once again, choose from boutique hotel or a sophisticated lodge.
